Weekly Bulletin 20th May 2022
Headteacher’s Message
We have had a busy week in school this week. Our Y3 and Y6 children have been taking part in a litter pick around the school grounds and our local area. With equipment loaned from Durham County Council our children have collected rubbish and helped to make our community a tidier place. Children in Y5 delivered a wonderfully informative and fun assembly all about the Vikings. Thank you to all who attended.
As you will be aware, we work in partnership with the Parish Council and Durham Police to address issues of parking and access to the school by car. Residents have expressed a number of concerns about parking and cars being driven along the pavements. I ask all parents to consider the safety of our children and drive responsibly when using the roads within Shincliffe. This will ensure the safety of all of our children and the wider community.
Each week I want to include a ‘snapshot’ of some of the things going on in school. For example, news from our ECO team, Worship group, V.I.P. (Very International People) and SNAG (School Nutrition Action Group). This week our focus is on the work of our School Council and an update is shared below.
Best wishes
Mr Rumbles
School Council
To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Friday the 27th May, we have decided to dress in red, white and blue. You do not need to wear all three but it would be appreciated if possible. On this day we would like you to bring in a pound for the Halo Trust Charity. We looked into a number of the charities that the Queen supports and we have chosen this charity because it helps to clear up unexploded bombs from war torn countries. This helps keep children safe. We are also looking forward to having a picnic lunch and we want to say a big thank you to FOSS for providing an ice-cream treat in the afternoon.
Thanks again,
William and Eleanor
Year 3, 4, 6 Eco Litter Pick

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations
During the week beginning 23rd of May, we are organising a number of activities and events within school to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the Queen’s 70-year reign. Each class has selected one decade from the 1950’s to 2020’s and will be researching a range of topics such as royal family events, music, fashion, toys, children’s books and films, technology and inventions (maybe some opportunities for dressing up too!).
On Friday 27th May at 10am, we would like to invite parents and carers into school for a Jubilee Coffee morning; come along and have a coffee, a cream scone and view our exhibition of the work the children have created to celebrate this special event. In addition to this, we would also like to ask the children to dress in red, white and blue for the day. We have organised a ‘Street Party’ themed lunch on the school field and we will end our celebrations with an ice-cream before home time.
If you have any memories, stories or memorabilia you would like to share with us from different decades or previous jubilees, please feel free to share these with your child and teachers.
FOSS Summer Fair
The FOSS Summer Fair will be on Saturday 2nd July 10 -12.
There will be a planning meeting at the Rose Tree pub 7pm on Wednesday 8th June, we look forward to welcoming anyone able to help out or with ideas for the event.
If you can’t make it but are able to spare an hour to make the event run please get in touch via the Facebook page.
Christian Values
This half term we are exploring the value of thankfulness. Our thinking will be focussed on the story of Easter and what they can tell us about thankfulness. Mr Rumbles, Mrs Matthews, Fr. Peter, Fr. Bill and the pupils, will lead worship.
Some further information about this half term’s value:
This half term we are focussing on Thankfulness as our whole school Christian Value. We will be looking at why being thankful is important and discussing what the children are thankful for in their lives.
Some things to think about:
- How can we express our appreciation and thankfulness in the life of the school?
- How can we demonstrate that we see the good things of life as a blessing and a gift rather than a right?
- How can we be thankful for more than just material possessions?
